Briefly about Alicante Airport Spain

Alicante International Airport, originally named El Altet, is around the 7th busiest Airports in Spain and serves destinations such as Alicante itself, Benidrom, Denia, Calpe, Torrevieja and all points along the Costa Blanca. Alicante airport is situated 9 kilometres southwest of the capital, in the municipality of Elche, in one of the most dynamic and up and coming business and economic zones on the Mediterranean coast. The essential role played by tourism is reflected in the percentage of international passenger flights that this airport handles and which make up eighty percent of the total. The main countries of origin of these passengers are the United Kingdom, Germany and Holland. Furthermore, scheduled domestic traffic has increased in recent years. The destinations most in demand are Madrid, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca. El Altet opened on 4 May 1967, replacing the older airdrome La Rabassa that had served Alicante since 1936. It took its name after the El Altet area where it was built. The first commercial flight that landed in the airport was Convair Metropolitan by Aviaco. Iberia established regular connections Alicante-Madrid and Alicante-Barcelona since November 1969. In early 1970s passengers’ traffic reached 1 million, which prompted a construction of a new passenger terminal. In later 1970s the runway was extended to three kilometers. In 2007, Ryanair, the largest European low cost airline established a base at the airport. In 2008, the airport handled 9,578,308 passengers, making it the sixth busiest airport by passenger numbers in Spain, and one of the 50 busiest in Europe. The largest number of passengers is carried by EasyJet, closely followed by Ryanair. Air Berlin is the distant third. Car rental is also available at Alicante Airport; there you can choose between wide choices of cars for your trip. There are two terminals at the airport, located one adjacent to the other. A new terminal is under construction and is due to be finished in 2009.
